Never much an enthusiast of anything outdoors, I was a bit hesitant when my husband suggested we have a garden…okay, more like stubborn and heavily opposed. A garden? Who needs a garden when there is a supermarket right up the street? But after a little persistent and even enlisting my kids, he convinced me it would be both economical and encourage us to eat healthier.
I guess I have to eat my words because having a garden has actually been great! Not only do we have vegetables at a fraction of the cost, but they taste absolutely delicious. And it has really taught my children responsibility. In fact, they seem to actually enjoy working in the garden. Imagine that. And having the garden has been even been slightly therapeutic for me; working out there it gives me the very rare opportunity of alone time and allows me to feel a sense of accomplishment.
I found a fabulous website, the Helpful Gardener, chock full of great gardening tips and advice. And for all you gardeners that have the problem of pesky pests, like I do, I would highly recommend using a mosquito hat; a wide brimmed bucket hat with netting that covers your face and neck. I admit, not the most attractive head piece, but certainly the most functional! Happy Gardening!
